AN AGGRESSIVE Microsoft has ratcheted up its Scroogled marketing campaign against Google by going after its popular Gmail service and highlighting the textual analysis Google employs on all emails.
Microsoft's Scroogled marketing campaign started off with the firm claiming users that rely on shopping results presented by Google might not be getting the best deal and now it has moved on to criticise the firm's Gmail service.
Microsoft, which last year finally dumped Hotmail and launched Outlook.com, decided to highlight the fact that apparently Google runs textual analysis on all emails to sell adverts.
Google's Gmail service has been subsidised with advertisements ever since its launch and the firm has admitted that it scans emails to provided targeted advertising.
Microsoft claims that its email service does not analyse users' emails and Gmail users cannot opt out, and it pointed out that Google is facing six lawsuits in the US for alleged eavesdropping or interception.
Stefan Weitz, senior director of Online Services at Microsoft said, "We honour the privacy of our Outlook.com users, and we are concerned that Google violates that privacy every time an Outlook.com user exchanges messages with someone on Gmail. This campaign is as much about protecting Outlook.com users from Gmail as it is about making sure Gmail users know what Google's doing."
Free cloud-based email services such as Gmail, Outlook.com and Yahoo Mail might offer low cost, convenient email communications, but the fact is that emails stored on servers can be analysed. Microsoft might claim not to go through emails to sell adverts but ultimately the same private information that it claims Google is rummaging through resides on its servers, meaning that users are best advised to adopt email encryption such as PGP if they want any semblance of privacy. µ
