Raspberry Pi shows off a camera

CHARITABLE ORGANISATION the Raspberry Pi Foundation has given fans a look at its upcoming camera attachment.

The good news is that the hardware is ready, the bad news is there is still some work to do on the picture quality.

"This is the final hardware; we've been working on tuning (Gert tells me that picture quality is 'pretty good' at the moment, but we're hoping to get it to 'bleedin marvellous' before we release the hardware)," blogged the foundation's Liz Upton.

"There is some work to do on the drivers, but everything's looking pretty peachy for the moment."

Upton did not have a release date for the hardware, and could only suggest that shipping would be at least a month away. She did have a price however, and that is $25.

According to another foundation member posting under the name JamesH, the board weighs "naff all" and measures 20x25x10mm. He said that the sensor is 8x8x5mm, adding, "Good luck to those people who want to try and change the lens...."

The camera module is an OV5647 made by Omnivision. JamesH says that it offers a fixed focus 5MP sensor that is capable of 2592x1944 stills, and 1080p30, 720p60 and 640x480p60/90 video. µ
