THE INTERNET'S FAVOURITE ANIMAL the cat will be the new token in the Monopoly board game, having seen off competition that included a robot.

The cat won its place in a vote held on Facebook. The vote winner was kept secret until today, but it has not surprised us. The internet loves cats, even more than it loves robots, helicopters, guitars and engagement rings.

While the cat's place is assured, it has come at the cost of one existing Monopoly token. Out of the dog, the car, the boat, the thimble, the wheelbarrow, the hat, the iron, and the shoe, the iron is the loser. The token that got the most votes to stay was the dog.

"We know that cat lovers around the world will be happy to welcome the new cat token into the Monopoly game," said Eric Nyman, SVP and global brand leader for Hasbro Gaming.

"While we're a bit sad to see the iron go, the cat token is a fantastic choice by the fans and we have no doubt it will become just as iconic as the original tokens."

Cat fans should wait until later this year before investing in a Monopoly boardgame, while iron fans should act before then to make sure that they get their chosen token. People who like both cats and irons are a marketers' dream.

The iron got just eight percent of the public vote. µ
