Toyota adds Nokia's Here maps to its in-car navigation system

JAPANESE AUTOMAKER Toyota has inked a deal with Nokia to integrate the firm's Here maps into its Touch & Go in-car navigation system.

Dubbed "Nokia Local Search for Automotive", the software is "designed to fulfill the requirements of the automotive industry," Nokia claims.

The addition of the Here maps system means that Toyota drivers will have faster and easier access to Nokia's online mapping information as well as community generated content such as ratings, reviews and images fed directly into their cars. This will make it possible for drivers to access recommendations on services in local areas.

"On a global average basis we power four out of five cars with fully integrated in-dash navigation systems," a Nokia spokesperson told The INQUIRER.

"We are providing content to partners including Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Dacia, ESRI, Ford, Garmin, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, Nikon, Pioneer, Scania, Toyota and Volkswagen."

Nokia Local Search for Automotive is expected to be commercially available in Toyota in-car navigation systems from early 2014 in Europe, Russia and the Middle East.

Toyota said it will continue to collaborate with Nokia to study more ways it can integrate the Finnish phone firm's technology and content. µ
