JAPANESE COMPUTER MAKER Fujitsu has announced a method to transfer files between devices simply by having a smartphone look at the data source.
Fujitsu announced its "intermediary image communications technology" as a way to transfer data from smartphones to other devices without the need for cabling or even internet access. The firm said that by pointing a smartphone at an image that has an IP address encoded within it, a connection between two devices can be established.
Fujitsu said that an IP address, one of the key network identifiers associated to all devices, can be encoded into images that are invisible to the human eye. According to the firm, a smartphone can decode the IP address coded within the image, setup a link to the data source and transfer data using any industry standard protocol.
The firm's key innovation is the encoding of IP addresses and other network identifier information within the image.
Fujitsu said, "The intermediary image communications technology superimposes microscopic light signals into the image, and by adjusting the number of these light signals, it can transmit information through the soft projection of light, similar to how optical communications work. The technology is used to convert communications data into signals that are invisible to the human eye, and superimpose them into the PC's desktop.
"Because the signal is superimposed in the desktop, no modifications to the original files are required."
Fujitsu said that it will try to productise the technology in 2014, and it plans to demonstrate the technology at next month's Mobile World Congress. µ
