CANADIAN PHONE MAKER Research in Motion (RIM) has changed the name of its Blackberry App World ahead of next week's launch of the Blackberry 10 mobile operating system (OS).

The app store is now known simply as Blackberry World, which RIM says "reflects a shift in the type of things you can purchase from the store as we transition to Blackberry 10 and beyond".

The firm adds that this is because with Blackberry 10 you'll also be able to download videos and music from the store. That's not to say that you can't expect plenty of apps too, as the firm recently revealed that it received 15,000 Blackberry 10 app submissions in less than two days.

This development comes just days ahead of RIM's Blackberry 10 unveiling that will take place on 30 January before the first handsets are released at the beginning of February.

We already know pretty much all there is to know about RIM's upcoming mobile OS, which the firm hopes will overtake Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 to take the number three spot in the smartphone OS market.

Blackberry 10 is a departure from RIM's present Blackberry mobile operating system and will be optimised for touchscreen devices. Taking tips from iOS and Android, Blackberry 10 will come with a new interactive lock  screen along with a completely overhauled home screen offering easy access to messages and an Active Frames view.

We also know that Blackberry 10 will support 4G LTE, boast a redesigned keyboard and come with a number of business focused features.

The Blackberry World name change will start rolling out to Blackberry devices over the coming weeks.

We'll be at the Blackberry 10 launch event next week. µ
