TAIWANESE TECHNOLOGY FIRM APC has shown off a PC that comes in a book-like cardboard case.
The firm calls its under $100 PC Paper, because it comes with a cardboard case that looks like a book. Inside Paper is the firm's redesigned Rock board. Both run Android and both are designed for mouse and keyboard inputs.
APC Paper is a complete APC system in a cardboard case. "APC Paper, with its unique recycled cardboard case, is a computer for people wanting to connect to the Internet without the need for specific Windows applications," said APC. "With special attention to design, APC paper blends seamlessly into any home or office environment."
You can preorder the bookish PC now, it is listed for $99. So far we have not found UK pricing. The Rock option is $79. The Rock, which comes without a case mirrors the Paper's specifications, except that it has a VGA port where its brother does not.
Expect to have to play 'hunt the PC' if you invest. Apparently the idea is that you put the Paper down and let it blend into your environment.
"There are many things around us in life whose size we're very familiar with - things that we see on a daily basis. Paper notebooks are such objects. Bookshelves, cabinets, files, and desks are often determined according to some relationship with its size. We think that designing a computer of a size and shape with the closest connection to these things would result in an object that blended in with that space," said the firm.
"Documents or books can be piled up on top of the computer, or it can be placed on a bookshelf. It's a computer that you could sandwich between a variety of objects."
For your money you get Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a Via Wondermedia ARM Cortex A9 800MHz CPU, 4GB of NAND flash storage, 512MB of DDR3 SDRAM memory and an HDMI port with HD 1080p output. µ
