THE MUSIC INDUSTRY in Germany has announced that in the last year its citizens legally downloaded over 100 million music files.
This is good news and those involved said that music downloads are now a key part of business.
"Music Downloads today represent a key pillar in the distribution portfolio of music and contribute significantly to the current market stabilisation. The fact that the album as a complete work of an artist or a band still plays the central role that pleases us most," said Dr. Florian Drücke, managing director of the Bundesverbands Musikindustri (BVMI).
"The success of legal downloads is also due to the commitment of the online vendors placed in the last ten years solidarity had invested with the music companies, despite a troubled market on the Internet in the attractiveness and user friendliness of the platforms."
Overall the number of music downloads rose from 94 million in 2011 to around 115 million legally downloaded songs and albums in 2012. Still, despite hitting record numbers we should remember that so-called 'piracy' is leaping through windows and stealing the shoes from people's feet.
"The encouraging number of downloads should not obscure the fact that the legal music offering on the network still has to compete with mass illegal free offers," added Dr Drücke.
"Also in 2013, is the biggest obstacle to growth for the further development of the legal music market on the Internet and therefore the key challenge for all who participate in the legal distribution of creative content."
The UK's British Phonographic Industry (BPI) says that digital album sales have increased by 15 percent to 30.5 million in the last year, while 99.6 percent of UK single sales are digital. In the last week of 2012 alone UK punters downloaded 5.6 million singles tracks. µ
