GAME MANUFACTURER Hasbro is kicking some new life into its Monopoly board game by offering Facebook users the chance to retire one of its game tokens by voting.
The vote, which is being held now on the social networking website, pits eight existing playable tokens against each other and asks people to save them by voting for their favourite.
This means that the dog, the car, the boat, the thimble, the iron, the wheelbarrow, the hat and the shoe, are currently clinging on for dear life and competing for your affections.
If you like one of them, are on Facebook, are thinking of buying a new Monopoly set and are a bit obsessive, we recommend that you participate in the vote.
The current leader to stay is the dog, which has 33 percent of the votes, while most likely to get dumped off the board is the wheelbarrow, which has just four percent. The car is second safest with a 15 percent share, while the iron hovers just above the wheelbarrow with a six percent share of the votes.
Hasbro is also asking people to vote for one of five new tokens. These are a robot, which is excellent, a cat, which surely could only be allowed in if the dog goes, a helicopter, an acoustic guitar and an engagement ring. The cat has been given a boost by getting an unofficial campaign manager in the form of charity Cats Protection, which is running an online drive to rally support and votes.
If you cannot make up your mind about which of these is best, and whether they are any better than the present options, there is some accompanying material about each option. For example, we are reminded that cats are worshipped on the internet, and that the robot could mow your lawn.
Hasbro encourages you to vote every day, and will announce the winner on 6 February. µ
