The number of bugs in a chip is relatively proportional to the number of transistors - Bob Colwell, former Intel chief architect
CES: BUDGET PHONE MAKER Kogan has unveiled a dual-SIM handset with a 5in display for just £119 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
The Kogan Agora runs the not so new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) mobile operating system and boasts a dual-core 1GHz Cortex-A9 CPU with 512MB RAM and a 5in LCD capacitive touchscreen that has 480x800 resolution with 186ppi pixel density.
Weighing 180g, the Agora features 0.3MP and 5MP front and rear cameras, respectively. There's also 4GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 32GB through a built-in microSD slot. As standard there are also WiFi, 3G and Bluetooth connectivity options.
As you'd expect from a budget handset, the specifications aren't the best out there, but for £120 they are pretty good.
Compared to other budget Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich handsets presently available, such as the Huawei Ascend G330 and the HTC Desire C, Kogan's Agora smartphone comes up trumps, mainly due to its screen, which is rather big in comparison.
Making our top 10 budget smartphones for Christmas 2012 list, the HTC Desire C features a 3.5in 320x480 touchscreen with a 600mhz CPU, 4GB of storage and a 5MP rear-facing camera. This device loses out on performance when pitted against the Kogan Agora, but is priced at a slightly cheaper £110.
Comparing the Agora to the budget level Huawei Ascend G330, which costs £19 less at £100, it features the same 480x800 touchscreen resolution but on a smaller 4in display. With the same 4GB storage, it also has a very similar dual-core 1 GHz Cortex A5 processor and 512MB of RAM.
But with a dual SIM, the Agora is a unique idea for those wanting the same device for both business and personal use. It seems that its comparatively large screen will be its main selling point, and might persuade punters in the budget smartphone market to go for a larger screen at a similar price.
The Kogan Agora can be purchased online at the manufacturer's website. µ
