LAS VEGAS: CHIP DESIGNER AMD has announced a suite of graphics and CPU hardware destined for release in 2013, including its first quad-core system-on-chip (SoC) processor.
Designed for use in tablet and notebook systems, the "Temash" and "Kabini" chips will combine graphics and processing onto a single piece of silicon. The company believes that the chips will help to dramatically increase the performance of tablet and notebook systems that previously had faced power and cooling constraints.
The quad-core APUs will be able to provide full support for Windows 8 and HD 1080p graphics. The company showed off a prototype device that included a HD 1080p 10.1in touchscreen and had a thickness of just 10mm.
AMD global business unit SVP and general manager Lisa Su said that the company had previously viewed the tablet sector as divided into two camps: lower-end devices which were designed mainly for consumers and high-end devices that led to bulky designs and short battery lives.
"What we are introducing with Temash is the ability to get the best of both worlds," Su explained. "This is truly a performance tablet with no compromise."
The Temash unveiling was part of a larger showcase of AMD's 2013 lineup. The company also showed reporters its plans for its Radeon mobile graphics hardware. The Radeon HD 8000M will add the company's Graphics Core Next architecture to the mobile GPU line, resulting in a performance increases.
The company is also looking to extend the reach of its APU line. The "Richland" A-series APUs will offer OEMs the ability to integrate new services such as facial recognition and gesture controls with PCs.
The updates are part of what Su says will be an eventful 2013 for AMD in which the company will seek to realise many of its long-term projects and goals.
"This is about, for AMD, both vision and execution," Su said. "We are going to continue to talk about this mantra for the next several years." µ
