THE POPE has sent his first tweet using his personal @Pontifex handle, after having joined Twitter earlier this month.
The Pope, who has around 710,000 followers despite following just seven people, all called Ben, took to the social network on Wednesday morning and sent his first personal tweet using an Ipad.
The tweet, which reads, "Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart," has had almost 23,000 retweets at the time of writing.
It seems that Pope Benedict XVI quickly became hooked on the social network, as he sent a further two tweets just moments after.
He said, "How can we celebrate the Year of Faith better in our daily lives?," before tweeting, "By speaking with Jesus in prayer, listening to what he tells you in the Gospel and looking for him in those in need," just three minutes later.
Contrary to some reports though, this isn't actually the Pope's first ever tweet. Back in June, he tweeted, "Dear Friends, I just launched. Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI," from the Vatican News Twitter account. µ
