CHIPMAKER Intel has said it expects its upcoming Avoton Atom chips to have different core counts and frequency grades.
Intel's launch of the Atom S1200 series chips sees the range edge closer to ARM in the low power server market. However the firm's trio of Atom S1200 series chips have few differences between the SKUs, which is something the firm will change in the future.
Intel's Atom S1200 series chips all have two cores spinning at either 1.6GHz or 2GHz with TDPs varying between 6.1W and 8.1W, which is in stark contrast to the myriad SKUs in the firm's Xeon range. Chris Feltham, Intel EMEA product manager told The INQUIRER that the firm will offer SKUs that vary both in core count and in frequency.
When asked whether Intel will stick to varying frequencies between Atom SKUs or move towards core count, Feltham said, "You'll probably see a little bit of both. I think there will be opportunities that will come up with high frequency parts or high cores [count], in much the same way we do for Xeon."
Feltham said the next generation Avoton Atom chips will see SKUs with varying core counts. "The launch SKU stack that we have shown, you can see we've done that at the frequency and TDP is not at the core level so far. While I can't comment on the Avoton product, I would potentially see that kind of segmentation going forward," said Feltham.
Intel will also offer embedded versions of its Atom S1200 chip but Feltham wouldn't be drawn on whether the firm will see more business with its embedded SKUs or some sort of land grid packaging, saying it is "too early to tell". Feltham said that the firm's embedded Atom S1200 chips could see some interest in the intelligent devices and digital signage markets.
Intel's decision to vary the clock speed of its Atom S1200 chips by just 400MHz is a surprising choice given the firm's history of segmenting its products. However given Feltham's comments it is clear that future Atom server chips will approach the level of core counts and frequencies chopping that could attract more Xeon customers. µ
