PHOTO SHARING APP Instagram has begun rolling out web profiles so that users can share their arty edited photographs from the web instead of being restricted to the app on IOS or Android devices.

The new web profiles allow you to log in the same way you do on the popular app client, and feature a Facebook style cover photo comprised of your most recent taken photographs.

As you'd expect, the total number of photos taken, people you're following and people following you are displayed on the right hand side. On the left is your profile picture with a "follow" button underneath and under this your filtered photos are displayed in the order they were taken.

"Your web profile features a selection of your recently shared photographs just above your profile photo and bio, giving others a snapshot of the photos you share on Instagram," the firm said in a blog post on Monday. "In addition, you can follow users, comment and like photos and edit your profile easily and directly from the web."

Instagram said the majority of users' web profiles should be ready "over the next few days".

To check if your web profile is ready yet, navigate to "[yourusername]" in any web browser.

Instagram is fast becoming one of the most popular social media applications. The news today that it will now be accessible through a web client shows the firm's commitment to growth as it expands out of the mobile market.

Back in September, Instagram overtook Twitter for the first time ever, having been used by a whopping 7.3 million users during the month of August.

In comparison, Twitter's mobile application was used by a fewer 6.9 million users, according to a Comscore report. The report, published by Allthingsd, revealed that Instagram users were also more engaged, spending on average 257 minutes on the Instagram app compared to the average Twitter user spending just 170 minutes tweeting from their smartphone. µ
