THE IPAD MINI went on sale in the UK today, and already looks to be a big seller for Apple with many models out of stock at Apple stores by early morning.
By 9am at the flagship Regent Street store in London, Apple had sold out of Ipad Mini 16GB models, with white Ipads also in demand by customers. By 11am the only models left to buy were the 32GB or 64GB black devices, but with a constant queue of around 50 people waiting in line for the 32GB version, the cheaper model is likely to sell out fast too.
Customers heading into the Covent Garden store by mid-morning had to dig deep to splash out for the £429 64GB version, as these were the only models available after the early morning rush led to a sell-out of all 16GB and 32GB versions.
At the Westfield Stratford mall Apple store, the 16GB model had sold out by 10am, but all other models were still available at mid-morning.
Those customers who bought their Ipad via the online preorder system also seem set to be disappointed.
One customer at the Regent Street Apple store had ordered a 16GB Ipad Mini on day one of preorder availability with a shipping date of 2 November, but was notified this morning that the shipping date has been pushed back to 12 November. So she decided to cancel that order and instead buy the more expensive 32GB model to have it in-hand today.
Some might remark, why not just wait a couple of weeks for the cheaper model to arrive, but then this is Apple with its special breed of Ifans.
Apple is quoting dispatch in two weeks for any online orders of the WiFi-only models, while the WiFi and 3G models won't be shipped until late November. µ
