AN ARCADE CABINET for the Raspberry Pi tinkerer's PC has hit its funding target on Kickstarter in just two days.

The Picade, as the Raspberry Pi based arcade is named, appeared on the crowdfunding website Kickstarter earlier this week, but has already generated enough interest to make the project a reality.

The Picade creators had a rather low investment target of only £32,768 and have already raised that amount and more, £33,135, with around 280 investors.

So far there are only prototype images available, but the idea of a games arcade machine built around the Raspberry Pi has pricked plenty of interest. Two models are suggested, a Picade and a Picade Mini. picade-specifications

"Don't know what to do with your Raspberry Pi? Want an awesome mini arcade cabinet for your home or desk at work? Want it to double up as a second screen for your computer when not playing arcade classics? Want to build it yourself? You've come to the right place!" says the project blurb on the Kickstarter website.

"The Picade and Picade Mini are high-quality desk top arcade cabinets for your Raspberry Pi that are designed and manufactured with care in Sheffield, UK."

It should only take around an hour to build the Picade, and just a couple of tools, one of which is a screwdriver. You will have to supply your own Raspberry Pi though.

The Picade creators are accepting funding until 29 November and have a couple more funding targets. Meeting these will let them extend the capabilities of the Picade.

For now they say that people who buy one will get cabinet panels and fasteners, an LCD panel mount with protective overlay, an LCD panel and driver board with inputs, amplifier and speakers, a 3.5mm stereo panel mounted headphone socket, and more. Most important, perhaps, is the "proper arcade stick" that they promise. µ
