PEOPLE THAT BRAVED the preorder experience and stumped up their hard-earned cash for a Surface tablet apparently are in luck, as the Microsoft tablet seems to be shipping.

The Surface tablet showed up in October and Microsoft sold out of some of the stock that it had. We don't know how much stock it had in the first place, but whatever it had, it sold out.

First to sell out was the cheapest model, and then so on. You can work it out from there. The 32GB tablet only option presently says sold out on the Microsoft webpage.

The two others, which include more memory or a case, are still up for grabs. Microsoft is promising free, "expedited" shipping. So expedited is that shipping that some people have a Surface in their hands already, almost a week after you could have bought one in the shops.

Microsoft had suggested that the tablets had been delayed until 2 November, which is tomorrow, and it has already offered customers an apology and a financial sweetener for their troubles.

"We are aware of the issues related to Surface shipments, and are working hard to get them delivered to customers as quickly as possible. Customers will be notified via email as soon as their order has been shipped," it said.

"We apologize for any confusion caused by emails stating an earlier or later arrival date. To make up for this inconvenience, we are giving impacted customers a single-use coupon for up to £50 (or $50 Canadian dollars) toward their next purchase from the Microsoft Online Store." µ
