A WHITE HOUSE investigation of Huawei did not find any evidence that it spied on the US for China.
Huawei and ZTE has been called threats to national security in a recent investigation by the US Congress. However an investigation ordered by the White House reportedly found no evidence that Huawei spied on behalf of China.
According to two of Reuters' sources the 18 month investigation of Huawei found that the firm was not suitable for infrastructure deployment for reasons such as security vulnerabilities. Reuters' sources said, "We knew certain parts of government really wanted [evidence of active spying]. We would have found it if it were there."
Not surprisingly Huawei has been rubbishing the congressional report that effectively shuts off a significant market for the firm. Yesterday the firm's spokesman Bill Plummer said, "Huawei is a $32 billion independent multinational that would not jeopardize its success or the integrity of its customers' networks for any government or third party. Ever."
Both Huawei and ZTE have been dogged by rumours that their equipment lets the Chinese government spy on infrastructure activity. Both firms deny the allegations, however last week's report was the most damaging blow as they try to win lucrative infrastructure contracts.
That insiders are now claiming that they couldn't find any evidence of spying and that some stakeholders wanted evidence to exist suggests that some conclusions were drawn even before the hardware and software were analysed. µ
