THE AVERAGE SIZE of mobile apps on IOS has grown by almost a fifth in the last six months, according to market research firm ABI Research.

Proving that mobile apps are increasingly taking up more memory space on mobile devices, ABI Research said its latest data shows that the global average IOS app size across all categories was 23MB in September, 16 percent more than in March.

Looking at specific genres, ABI said the games category, which is the most popular category, is where app sizes are increasing the most, with the average game app now 60MB in size, an increase of 42 percent since March.

ABI Research said the global increase in app size is down to two main reasons, the first being Apple's decision to up the limit for 3G/4G downloadable apps from 20MB to 50MB. ABI Research senior analyst Aapo Markkanen explained that this "clearly had an unleashing effect on developers" as it allowed them to develop more complex games with more detailed graphics.

The second factor is related to Apple's new Ipad's Retina display that has influenced developers to launch more graphically rich apps as well as releasing updates for older apps to take advantage of the new high-resolution display.

Markkanen said that the news means owners of older devices like the 8GB Iphone 3G and Iphone 4 will have filled up their available space a long time ago, but even customers with more recent 16GB devices might encounter storage problems soon enough.

"The consumers with 16GB devices are likely to become more conscious about what apps to keep and what to uninstall, so the developers' bar to impress will be getting even higher than it is now," he said. "This could also speed up the adoption of the mobile cloud as a storage remedy quite significantly."

On Android devices, ABI said apps have increased in size by 10 percent since March. The games category again was responsible, with Android game apps almost quadrupling in size in the last six months to an average of just over 40MB. µ
