ONLINE RETAILER Amazon has released an addition to its growing family of tablet devices in the UK, the Kindle Paperwhite.
Launching in both WiFi-only and 3G models, the Kindle Paperwhite is Amazon's first ereader with an illuminated screen so users can skim through electronic books in the dark. First released in the US earlier this year, Amazon's Kindle Paperwhite ereader is the first to have a built-in front light as opposed to a backlight, to "evenly illuminate the screen".
"Paperwhite guides light towards the display from above instead of projecting it out at your eyes like back-lit displays, thereby reducing screen fatigue," Amazon said in a post on its website.
"We've added 62 percent more pixels to the display to render exceptionally sharp, clear text and images, and 25 percent higher contrast, so whites are whiter, blacks are blacker."
The Kindle Paperwhite has a 6in 16-level grey scale screen with 212ppi pixel density supporting two point multi-touch. Both models measure 169x117x9.1mm, and the 3G model weighs 222g whereas the WiFi-only model is a lighter 213g.
Amazon said the Kindle Paperwhite will last up to eight weeks on a single charge, based on half an hour of reading per day with wireless off and the light setting at 10. There's no plug adapter bundled with the device, but Amazon said it will take around four hours to fully charge when plugged into a computer through its USB connection.
Amazon will also pay for the 3G connectivity for the 3G model, with no monthly fee or need to sign up for a contract.
The WiFi only version of the Kindle Paperwhite will set you back £109 and the 3G edition £169 when they launch along with the Kindle Fire HD tablet on 25 October. Both devices can be preordered now with a limit of two per customer.
Along with the Kindle Paperwhite, Amazon also launched a new addition to the Kindle Store, the Kindle Owners' Lending Library, which will be available later this month. The store allows Amazon Prime members to access over 200,000 books to borrow for free as frequently as once a month, with no due dates. µ
