KOREAN HARDWARE MAKER Samsung is adding the Spotify music streaming service to its Smart TVs, bringing millions of music tracks on demand into living rooms.
Spotify is the subscription alternative to services like Apple's Itunes, and lets users play a monthly fee to access music, in its case millions of tracks, rather than buying them individually.
Spotify will appear as an app on Samsung Smart televisions and Blu-ray players later this year, according to the hardware firm. There's not much of the year left, so let's assume that this means before Christmas, otherwise known as the holiday sales season.
"Great music demands great sound quality. With the new Spotify app, people no longer need to fuss about connecting cables from their laptop or tablet to Hi-Fi equipment. Spotify for Samsung Smart TVs and home theatre systems brings Spotify's huge music library directly into your living room," said Dan Saunders, director of content services for Samsung Electronics Europe.
Existing users will only have to download the app and sign in. Non-users will have to download the app and sign up. Sceptics and freeloaders can try out the service for free for thirty days.
"It's our dream to make all the world's music available instantly to everyone, everywhere, and bringing our service to Samsung Smart TVs is taking us another step closer to turning this dream into reality," added Pascal de Mul, global head of hardware partnerships for Spotify.
"The television is at the heart of most people's home entertainment experience, so it is a natural fit to make our music service available on internet-connected Smart TVs."
Samsung said that Spotify will appear on its E series TVs first, suggesting that its other Smart TVs will also get the same treatment. µ
