SATNAV VENDOR Tomtom has launched its first dedicated navigation app for Android, after teasing the app back in August.
While most Android users like Iphone users were content with the free Google Maps application, Tomtom's pricey Android application offers features that rival Google's preloaded app.
Tomtom's app for Android, which costs between £26.99 and £39.99, uses its IQ Routes and HD Traffic features to give users fast and accurate routing without the need for a 3G connection. Tomtom boasts that the app also comes with advanced lane guidance, 2D and 3D driving views, fast route recalculation and real-time speed camera alerts.
Corinne Vigreux, MD of Tomtom said, "We aim to make TomTom content and services available to as many devices and platforms as we can. Bringing TomTom navigation to Android smartphones is, therefore, a significant milestone for us."
Although Tomtom sound fairly chuffed with its Android app, we're not sure that those with newer Android handsets will be, as it doesn't work with smartphones using newer builds of Google's mobile operating system. This means that those of you with the latest Android smartphones, such as the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S3, won't be able to download the app.
Still, if you're using an older Android phone, you can buy the app at Google Play, as long as you have 2.7GB of free storage space. µ
