THE OPEN SOURCE Open WebOS project has released its first full production release of Open WebOS 1.0.
After HP unceremoniously dumped WebOS during Leo Apotheker's brief reign, Meg Whitman's arrival saw the operating system spun off into an open source project that has finally born fruit. The Open WebOS project announced it has released Open WebOS 1.0 that provides the full WebOS experience on touchscreen devices.
According to the Open WebOS project, in the past nine months the contributors have delivered over 450,000 lines of code resulting in more than 75 Open WebOS components. According to the project, the result is an Open WebOS 1.0 release that includes core components including an email client and a web browser, but most importantly there is also support for the Enyo 2 Javascript framework.
The project said it has an Open Embedded build that allows anyone to run Open WebOS within an Open Embedded emulator. The outfit is still supporting the desktop build environment.
The Open Web OS project said that in the future it will be looking to implement the Qt 5 framework, incorporate open source media and audio components and work on Connman network management.
The Open WebOS project has put the source code for Open WebOS 1.0 on Github. µ
