HIPSTER PHOTO SHARING APP Instagram has overtaken Twitter for the first time ever, having been used by a whopping 7.3 million users during the month of August.
In comparison, Twitter's mobile application was used by a fewer 6.9 million users, according to a Comscore report. The report, published by Allthingsd, reveals that Instagram users were also more engaged, spending on average 257 minutes on the app compared to the average Twitter user spending just 170 minutes tweeting from their smartphone.
Although Instagram might be winning the usage battle it looks like Twitter is still winning the popularity war, besting its photo-sharing rival with 29 million unique US visitors during August, compared to 22 million Instagrammers.
Even so, overtaking Twitter is a huge milestone for Instagram, as the firm has only been on the scene for two years and has already shown signs of overtaking the six year old micro-blogging website.
This news will be welcomed by Facebook, which recently acquired Instagram for a cool $1bn. However, Facebook has assured Instagram's loyal users - all 22 million of them - that the app isn't going anywhere.
It said, "As we said from the beginning, we are committed to building and growing Instagram independently.
"Instagram will continue to serve its community, and we will help Instagram continue to grow by using Facebook's strong engineering team and infrastructure. We also can't wait to work with the talented Instagram team to improve the mobile experience."
Twitter was unavailable for comment at the time of publication. µ
