GAMING HARDWARE FIRM Sony will release a slimmer version of its Playstation 3 games console before the end of the year.

Three versions of the slimline PS3 will go on sale, and each has subtle differences. One, which will go on sale in Europe only, is a 12GB flash memory model, and the two others offer either 500GB or 250GB hard drives.

We only have prices in Euros so far. These are €299 for the 500GB model and €229 for the 12GB flash memory console.

It does not look like the 250GB model will be released in the UK. In the US the 250GB option will only be sold as part of a bundled package. There it will cost $269.

The volume and weight of the PS3 have been reduced by more than half, but the console keeps its curved design. A sliding disc cover is used to save space, said the firm.

The flash memory model is perhaps best described as the cheap or entry level option, and users can couple it with a standalone 500GB hard drive that goes on sale at the same time, if they desire. µ
