AMERICAN PHONE MAKER Motorola announced the world's first 2GHz Intel powered smartphone today, the Motorola Razr I.

Unveiled at an event in London attended by The INQUIRER this morning, the Motorola Razr I features a 2GHz single-core Intel Atom processor. While this doesn't sound all that impressive on paper, Motorola told us it "outperforms the leading dual-core products" thanks to Intel's hyperthreading technology, and we'll be putting that to the test later on today.

This processor also helps deliver excellent battery life, Motorola claims, saying that the 2,000mAh battery will last for around 20 hours of average to heavy use.

"What's more, the Razr I is 40 percent more powerful than the Iphone 4S," Motorola Mobility SVP Jim Wicks said, "which means you can stream music over WiFi for twice as long."

Another of the handset's standout features is its 4.3in edge-to-edge display, which Motorola claims delivers a 15 percent larger screen than the Iphone 5 in a similarly sized package. This large Super AMOLED touchscreen boasts 540x960 HD resolution and should remain free from scratches thanks to its Gorilla Glass coating.

The handset follows in the footsteps of the Motorola Defy with its life-proof smarts. On the outside there's Kevlar for lightweight protection against tumbles and scratches, and Motorola tells us that the Razr I also comes with a waterproof coating.

Other specifications include Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with an update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on its way, Motorola's custom user interface (UI), an 8MP camera that fires in less than one second, HD 1080p video and integrated NFC technology. The handset will also have an unlockable bootloader "for those who want to customise their handset".

Speaking at the event, Wicks said, "Both Motorola and Google are driven by innovation. This new phone is focussed on delivering three key things - speed, power management and Android - and that's exactly what it does."

The Motorola Razr I will be on sale in the UK from the beginning of October, and will be available through Orange, T-Mobile, Tesco Mobile, Virgin Media and Phones 4U. There's no word on its pricing yet.

Check back later this week for our Motorola Razr I review. µ
