TODAY IN NEW YORK HTC announced the midrange Windows Phone 8S handset, an affordable alternative to its flagship Windows Phone 8X smartphone.

If you're wondering what the handset's odd name is all about, HTC told us that it worked with Microsoft on branding the handset, as it along with the HTC Windows Phone 8X will feature in a joint advertising campaign from the two companies.

Clearly aimed at a younger audience than HTC's flagship Windows Phone 8X, the Windows Phone 8S will be available in four different two-tone variants; grey/yellow, black/white, red/orange and blue.

The handset's specifications cement its place in HTC's mid-range lineup, as it features a 4in 480x800 screen displaying Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 user interface, along with a 1GHz dual-core processor and 512MB of RAM. There's also a 5MP rear-facing camera and 4GB of internal storage with microSD memory expansion.

Of course, it also comes preloaded with Beats Audio technology, but users's won't find a pair of free Beats by Dr Dre headphones. HTC told us this is because the headphones are "too expensive" and "narrows consumers' fashion choice". Still, the integrated Beats audio technology will improve the sound of any pair of headphones.

The HTC Windows Phone 8S will be available at the beginning of October with all four colour variants set to hit the UK. It will also be available through all UK mobile operators, as well as from Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4U. There are no details on pricing yet. µ
