CRIMSON MOBILE OPERATOR Vodafone has revealed that Iphone 5 buyers will have to sign up to a specific, more expensive contract to take advantage of Facetime over 3G.

Speaking to The INQUIRER, a Vodafone spokesperson explained, "The Iphone 5 will be available on Vodafone Red plans, giving customers access to Voice over IP services (including Facetime over 3G) as part of their data allowance."

The network didn't mention specific prices, although at present Vodafone Red contracts for Iphone customers are priced from at least £37 a month.

Vodafone added that existing Iphone users will also have to upgrade to use the new IOS 6 feature unless they're already paying £40 a month or more.

It said, "Existing pay monthly Iphone 4 and 4S customers on price plans of more than £40 a month have VoIP included and anyone can move to Vodafone Red plans without extending their commitment provided they pay the same or more each month. This also enables them to benefit from unlimited calls and texts, which we believe offers them great value."

"Alternatively, they can purchase additional data (£10 per month for 2GB) to access Voice over IP."

Unsurprisngly, all other UK networks including O2, EE and Three will allow Facetime over 3G on any tariff.

Update
We've just spoke to Vodafone, who have told us that "only a few" of its lower priced tariffs won't come with VoIP services included. µ
