Thanks to the Opus specification

VOICE OVER IP (VoIP) service Skype announced plans to improve its call quality today, thanks to the approval of the Opus specification.

Microsoft subsidiary Skype has revealed that the Internet Engineering Task Force (ITEF) has approved the final release of the new Opus specification, after the firm put it forward to the industry body in September 2010.

Opus is a free codec for real time communications that is able to handle all audio tasks and will drastically enhance audio experiences "across the spectrum", Skype promises, saying it will make for fewer annoying gaps in conversation.

A Skype spokesperson explained, "Opus will make a quiet, but crystal clear entry into the world - most people will take for granted the high sound fidelity when it arrives in Skype client, through browsers and gateways and we hope on mobile phones, game consoles and in conference rooms."

"We believe that Opus is the first codec with state-of-the-art performance for any type of audio signal, for any application - communications, streaming and storage - and under any condition."

"There's even a hybrid mode using both codecs at the same time for listening over the phone to your best friends' band, or practicing together over a video call."

Skype also said that mobile operators will enjoy the service as much as consumers, because the Opus codec users fewer megabytes. We're not quite sure we agree with that statement, as more megabytes represent more revenue for the greedy mobile networks.

Skype has yet to reveal how and when it will begin rolling out its improved VoIP audio service. µ
