EREADER FIRM Kobo has added three more pieces of hardware to its range, the Mini, Glo and Arc.

The latter sees the firm adding an Android tablet to its range, and sees it taking on the Google Nexus 7 in the 7in touchscreen handheld device market, not to mention Amazon and its Kindle and Kindle Fire.

Kobo has something of the jump on Amazon here, and while the US firm has said it has sold out of its own touchscreen Kindle Fire and is tipped to be launching a new model later on today it could find itself playing catchup.

Kobo ereaders, sold in the UK through WH Smiths and by Best Buy in the US, start at £59.99 and are expected to go on sale next month.

"Our focus has remained firmly on delivering a superior experience for booklovers around the world. With 11,000 booksellers and leading retail partners across five continents, we are bringing the new Kobo Family to booklovers everywhere," said Kobo CEO Michael Serbinis.

"The new Kobo Family provides more choice for booklovers and a superior ereading and content discovery experience - truly, an ereader for everyone."

The firm announced three devices, and each is different. The Glo has what Kobo calls "Comfortlight" technology, which is to say a sort of warm backlight for easy night time reading. The Glo has a no-glare, 6in high resolution XGA screen and WiFi connectivity. It will give you a penny change from £100.

The Mini is of course the smallest of the pack and has a 5in screen. It is also the cheapest of the batch and costs £59.99.kobo-arc-image

The Arc is possibly the most interesting of the trio and offers the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. This means that it includes internet connectivity and access to the Google Play application store. It has a high resolution sceen with 16 million colours, a built-in microphone and a 1.3MP camera.

As well as having access to Google Play the Arc comes preloaded with apps including Facebook and Twitter. The Arc will be available this November, starting at £159.99 with 8GB of internal storage and £189.99 for the 16GB model. µ
