TAIWANESE COMPUTER MAKER Acer announced that its global flagship Android smartphone, the Cloudmobile S500 will be rolled out across Europe from today.
Revealing the news at the IFA expo in Berlin, the president of Acer's smartphone group said, "In Barcelona this year we reviewed our intention to launch the S500 cloud mobile. Today after all these months I am pleased to tell you that we are shipping the S500 mobile out in Europe as we speak."
Acer originally unveiled the Cloud Mobile S500 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February, but has since left the UK waiting with bated breath while it decided whether to launch it across the pond.
The S500 sports a Snapdragon dual-core S4 processor running at 1.5GHz on Google's Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. It boasts a 4.3in HD 720p LCD display with 720×1280 351ppi resolution and has 1GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage.
Acer said the S500 will also feature NFC technology, an 8MP rear camera with LED flash and HD 1080p video recording capabilities.
"The S500 has a fast start up speed of 0.7 seconds on camera, with burst shutter options, HDR and all the filters you could possibly conceive within a camera. It also has the highest panoramic resolution of 27MP," Acer said.
On the outside, there's an improved shell design with a surface that is "metallically finished, using the same material that is used in the Atomium structure in Brussels".
Now that we can finally get our hands on it in the UK, Acer also announced today that it will be joined by its cloud service Acer Cloud in what is "the first smartphone that Acer has introduced into the range with the feature".
Comparing smartphones to "personal computers but in small packages", Acer said that within the next four months it also plans to launch two more mobile products - a 4.2in dual SIM card device that will be more affordable, and another "mass market" device which remains undisclosed. µ
