ONLINE RETAIL GIANT Amazon is summoning the press to a launch event on 6 September, where the firm is expected to launch its second generation Kindle Fire tablet.
The text on the invitation sent to Allthingsd is pretty vague, with the firm simply saying, "Please join us for an Amazon Press Conference." However, rumours are rife that the company will use the event to unveil its new Kindle Fire tablet, which is expected to see a release here in the UK later this year.
While mooted specifications are still few and far between, there are whispers that the Amazon Kindle Fire could feature a larger 10in screen and run a heavily tweaked version of Android. We're also expecting it to come with a front-facing video calling camera plus microUSB and microHDMI ports.
Amazon's launch event comes just a day after Nokia's Windows Phone 8 launch event in New York, and days before Apple's rumoured Iphone 5 launch event. It also comes hot on the heels of the biggest quarter in tablet sales history.
According to ABI Research, tablets set a new sales record for the April to June quarter. The research firm reported that overall media tablet sales hit 25 million units in the quarter.
Those sales figures resulted in 77 percent year over year growth of the market.
"New vendors and products are entering the fray during the second half of the year, including tablets from Google and Microsoft," said ABI research. "ABI Research expects the new products to impact shares - both positively from Google Nexus 7 and negatively from Microsoft's Surface tablets - of Google's Android OS, used on most tablet models."
According to the research firm, Amazon holds the third spot in tablet sales, trailing behind Apple and Samsung.
There's also talk that Amazon will launch new e-reader devices at the event in Los Angeles, but the firm told us it was unable to comment on rumour and speculation.
Amazon confirmed to The INQUIRER that it is, indeed, holding a press event on September 6.µ
