SOFTWARE HOUSE Microsoft has unveiled another logo, its first in two decades.
The new logo does away with the old italicised text and is just a blocky version of the Windows logo. It is, to be fair, incredibly underwhelming although it probably cost thousands, even tens or hundreds of thousands to create.
Microsoft is very pleased with itself though, and says that its blocky new logo has been created because it is on the eve on releasing an exciting new product.
What that might be we don't know, but perhaps Microsoft means Windows 8. From what we have seen Windows 8 and its Metro Modern user interface are blocky and awkward looking, and so is this.
Jeff Hansen, general manager for Brand Strategy at Microsoft explained the new look in the sort of terms that make people with goatees and fake spectacles nod sagely and scratch their beards.
"The logo has two components: the logotype and the symbol. For the logotype, we are using the Segoe font which is the same font we use in our products as well as our marketing communications," he said.
"The symbol is important in a world of digital motion. The symbol's squares of color are intended to express the company's diverse portfolio of products."
A video that accompanies the launch shows off this "diverse portfolio of products" and our takeaway from this is that they are Windows, Office and Xbox. Windows Phones do not get a look in, but that's probably for the best.
Fans of logos, of which there must be some somewhere, might notice that Microsoft's effort is a lot like the Google Chrome one. A LOT LIKE it in fact. So we do hope, really hope, that Microsoft hasn't used the same design company as its rival. Otherwise someone is going to be having a laugh at Microsoft's expense. µ
