STORAGE VENDOR Toshiba has launched a 1.6TB 2.5in solid state disk (SSD) drive that supports the Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) 12Gbit/s interface.
Toshiba, which has recently focused on its hard drive operations, has released a clutch of 2.5in enterprise SSDs that will compete against PCI-Express SSD boards. The firm's range-topping PX02SM SSDs support SAS 6Gbit/s and 12Gbit/s interfaces and top out at 1.6TB capacity.
As Toshiba pushes its PX02SM SSDs into the high performance server market, it also has the more mundane PX02AM series, which comes in 100GB, 200GB and 400GB capacities and uses the SATA3 interface. The firm rounds things off with its PX03AN series drives, which are pitched at entry-level servers with capacities of 55GB, 120GB, 240GB and 480GB based on newer 19nm consumer grade multi-level cell (MLC) NAND chips.
Toshiba's range-topping PX02SM comes with some very impressive specifications, including sequential 64kB read and write bandwidth of 900MB/s and 400MB/s, respectively, while random 4kB read and write I/O operations per second are 120,000 and 30,000, respectively. The firm's most impressive specification point is the fact that it has packed 1.6TB of NAND flash into a 2.5in chassis just 15mm thick.
Toshiba's PX02SM and PX02AM drives use 24nm enterprise grade MLC NAND chips and the most important differences are the increased mean-time-before-failure figures. The firm puts a five year warranty on its PX02SM drives, while the PX02AM and the PX03AN units receive a three year warranty.
In the past year firms such as Fusion IO have enjoyed considerable success by flogging SSDs that use the PCI-Express interface. However server chassis have for many years supported multiple 2.5in drives and if Toshiba can pack 1.6TB and respectable performance into those drive bays, it could slow down the march of PCI-Express SSDs.
Toshiba said its PX02SM, PX02AM and PX03AN series SSDs will ship in the fourth quarter. µ
