BRITISH SATELLITE BROADCASTER Sky has rolled out an updated IOS app to turn the Ipad into a touchscreen remote control for Sky+ set-top boxes.

Having announced last month that the update would be released this Summer, Sky has kept its promise, delivering the update to Sky TV customers with Sky+ HD boxes that allows them to pause and rewind content by swiping their Ipad screens.

The main appeal of the app is that it allows Sky customers to use the Ipad as a remote control, view their TV schedule and record, edit and delete recordings without interrupting what they are watching on their TV. It also features other aesthetic and navigation improvements.

Although it's a great perk for Sky users with Ipads, the British broadcaster has so far failed to bring out the app update for Apple's smartphone user base, delivering it to Ipad users only. Nevertheless, the firm did say that the Ipad would be the first to receive the update, indicating that we might see an update for the Iphone and Ipod Touch pretty soon.

However, Google fans might be frustrated to learn that Sky+ for Android is also without the update, with the firm not mentioning any future release.

Those who have already downloaded the Sky+ app will notice the similarities it has with Zeebox, a second-screen IOS and Android app designed to connect TV viewers. That's because Sky has taken a 10 per cent stake in Zeebox to support its future products.

"Later this summer we'll also be integrating Zeebox second screen functionality in to the app," Sky said in a statement.

"This will allow Sky customers to follow online reaction to their favourite shows directly through the app via integrated twitter feeds, plus enjoy bonus content specifically created around their favourite Sky shows."

The news comes just after Sky posted record profits of £1.2bn for the year ended 30 June, up 14 per cent from the previous year. µ
