SWORDS AND SPELLS GAME Diablo III has racked up ten million players in the few months since it was released and it now boasts more users than World of Warcraft.
Coincidentally, World of Warcraft lost over one million subscribers in the last three months and dropped from 10.2 million to 9.1 million.
That appears to be just a blip in games publisher Activision's performance however, and it is due to release the next version of the title, World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, in September.
For now it still has plenty to celebrate. including games, add ons and toys. Its Skylanders Spyro's Adventure was the best-selling console and hand-held game in revenues for the first half of this year, and in the last three months Activision Blizzard has enjoyed the top spot in the the independent game publisher rankings in both North America and Europe.
Diablo III, which was released in May, is the top selling PC game of the year so far, and sold three and a half million copies on the first day of release. Now ten million players are swinging their virtual swords through it.
Activision's net revenue was down in the quarter, and at $1.08bn this represents only a smallish drop compared to the $1.15bn it reported in the second quarter last year. µ
