DESPITE THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED Iphone 5 being just over the horizon, Apple has managed to grow its share of the mobile market during the second quarter.
The latest data from analyst Comscore has revealed that the number of Iphone users in the US grew by 1.4 per cent to 15.4 per cent during the second quarter, while IOS use is up 1.7 per cent to 32.4 per cent. The discrepancy in numbers between handset and OS here is due to Comscore incorporating data for all mobile devices in the former category, and smartphone-only for the latter.
Android has a bigger share overall of mobile subscribers, with Google's mobile OS accounting for 51.6 per cent of smartphone users, up by 0.6 per cent. The big loser in the latest Comscore report is Research In Motion, which dipped 1.6 per cent to a 10.7 per cent share of smartphone subscribers.
Samsung and LG remain the top two mobile vendors, with 25.6 and 18.8 per cent of mobile users respectively, although both vendors saw a slight decrease in subscribers for the second quarter.
The Comscore report also revealed that mobile users are turning more frequently to their handsets for social and gaming purposes.
For the quarter ending 30 June, 36.9 per cent of mobile users accessed a social networking web site or blog on their handsets, up almost a percentage point from 36.1 per cent compared to the first quarter.
Mobile gaming increased by the same amount, up from 32.6 per cent to 33.4 per cent quarter on quarter.
The numbers might be only slowly creeping up, but the overall pattern shows that a greater proportion of mobile subscribers are using their handhelds for traditional desktop tasks.
The biggest growth areas for mobile content use were music and apps. Those using their handsets to listen to music grew by 2.3 per cent to 27.6 per cent, while 51.4 per cent have used a downloaded app, up from 50 per cent last quarter.
But the humble text message is still by far the most popular use for mobile devices, with three quarters of users sending a text over the period. µ
