Apple is seeking $2.52bn in damages from Samsung

MAKER OF SHINY TOYS Apple reportedly is seeking $2.52bn in damages from Samsung, saying the Korean firm chose to compete by copying its products.

Reuters reports that in a partially redacted filing on Tuesday, Apple estimated that Samsung should cough up substantial monetary damages to the tune of $2.525bn for choosing to copy products such as the Iphone and Ipad and for illegally infringing its patents.

Apple said that by choosing to imitate its products, Samsung overtook it as the world's largest smartphone maker, reaping "billions of dollars in profits", while costing Apple an estimated $500m in lost profit.

While some of this $2.52bn is to cover the use of Apple's "overscroll bounce" and "scrolling API" technologies, the bulk of the damages are related to design.

This development follows the news that Apple has successfully won a Europe wide ban on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, although it failed to get a similar injunction on the Galaxy Tab 10.1N.

Apple and Samsung are set to go to trial before US District Court Judge Lucy Koh on 30 July. µ
