BUBBLY NETWORK O2 will start rolling out free WiFi across London from today, following the launch of the scheme back in December.
O2, which beat Sky and Virgin Media to secure the deal, will be bringing free WiFi to top London hotspots, which will be free for everybody to use, regardless of what existing network provider they might have.
Rolling out just in time for the London 2012 Olympics, O2 WiFi will be coming to areas such as Leicester Square, Picadilly Circus and the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea thanks to the network striking a deal with Westminster Council. Once signed-up to the scheme, Londoners' smartphones will automatically connect to the free O2 WiFi.
Gavin Franks, MD of O2 Wifi said, "We are proud to announce that today, we can bring O2 Wifi to some of the busiest streets and squares of central London.
"We are now providing Londoners and visitors alike with fast, free, reliable wifi when visiting some of the busiest areas in Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea. This comes after a succession of venue announcements with partners like Costa Coffee, House of Fraser and McDonald’s.
"O2 Wifi was launched fifteen months ago and in that time we have transformed the wifi market with innovation and fresh thinking."
The scheme has also received the backing of London Mayor Boris Johnson, who says the free WiFi reaffirms the UK as one of the leading technology capitals in the world.
He said,"With millions of extra people coming to town for the Games, we want to ensure we showcase the capital as the best city in the world to work and visit, and the addition of free Wifi to some of our most popular landmarks is crucial in helping to maintaining that reputation." µ
