MEMORY MAKER Micron has announced 2Gb and 4Gb DDR3-2133 memory chips for the embedded market.

Micron, which is set to become the new owner of Elpida, announced that it has developed 2Gb and 4Gb memory modules that run at DDR3-2133 speeds using the firm's 30nm process node. The firm said its new chips will find their way into system-on-chip devices and graphics cards.

Micron even had two big name firms lined up as customers of its new memory modules, with AMD claiming the modules would "drive even more performance" from its graphics cards. However both AMD and Nvidia have long since opted for GDDR5 on their high-end graphics cards, using DDR variants for low-end units.

Robert Feurle, VP of DRAM marketing for Micron said, "High-speed DDR3 will be powering the mainstream graphics and high-performance networking markets in 2012 and beyond. Micron is prepared to support these demanding markets by leveraging our expertise with high-volume, cost-efficient DDR3 products and developing these very high-performance DDR3 devices. The combination of our advanced process technology and our commitment to the graphics and high-end computing markets has proven highly successful, and these new 30nm 2Gb and 4Gb DDR3 products will continue to deliver on that promise."

Micron also announced that it will be offering ECC UDIMMs with DDR3-2133 chips for network applications, with interconnect vendor LSI claiming the modules are needed to meet network bandwidth requirements.

Micron said its 2Gb and 4Gb DDR3-2133 modules are sampling now with volume production expected this Summer. µ
