10 million and counting

Twitter has 10 million UK users

MICRO BLOGGING SERVICE Twitter has boasted that it has ten million users in the UK, most of whom seem to be tweeting from mobile devices.

The ten million users are "active" according to a message from Twitter's UK office, meaning that they login at least once a month.

If that is active, we'd probably qualify for the Twitter Olympics, but whatever. The firm is more than happy to boast about its business, including the fact that 80 per cent of those users, or eight million people, tweet from mobile devices.

In February Twitter said it had 500 million users globally, and in March it revealed that it had 140 million active users and 340 million tweets a day. Hoping to drive even more traffic and business is a new email that Twitter has started sending to its users.

The email, which we have received and Twitter has blogged about, draws attention to messages and retweets from people that you follow that you might have missed.

It is likely that if some people are hopping on Twitter only once a month they will have missed quite a few.

Also this month Twitter updated the mobile version to give its users, whether they are on smartphones or feature phones, a consistent experience. µ
