CHIPMAKER Samsung has announced its Exynos 4 Quad quad-core system-on-chip (SoC) processor, which the firm said will appear in its Galaxy S III smartphone.
Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S III launch has been highly anticipated, however the company has pre-announced the chip that will power its next top-of-the-range smartphone. Samsung's Exynos 4 Quad SoC will be the firm's quad-core ARM Cortex M9 implementation with frequencies starting at 1.4GHz.
Samsung said the Exynos 4 Quad, which is fabbed on a 32nm High-K metal gate process node, is pin-compatible and the same physical size as its dual-core Exynos 4 Dual chip. According to the firm the chip has 20 per cent lower power consumption than its 45nm Exynos 4 Dual SoC, thanks in part to power gating that can power down cores and scale the voltage on each core.
Samsung spent most of its time touting the power efficiency of its Exynos 4 Quad SoC and also announced a supporting power management chip that handles the voltage scaling for the chip. The firm said the S5M8767 chip can scale voltages in increments of 6.25mV depending on clock speed.
Samsung disclosed what the Exynos 4 Quad should be able to do, giving points as to what punters can expect in the firm's Galaxy S III. The firm said the SoC can handle 30fps HD 1080p video recording and has an HDMI 1.4 video output.
With Samsung's Galaxy S III launch next week, the firm said its high-end smartphone will be the first to feature the Exynos 4 Quad SoC while other handset makers are also sampling the chip.
It is interesting to see Samsung stress the power efficiency of its Exynos 4 Quad SoC more than its outright performance. The question is whether the firm's talk of power efficiency will mean that the Galaxy S III will last for more than a day before needing a recharge. µ
