HIS launches its AMD Radeon HD 7850 Fan 2GB video card

Despite chip shortages

GRAPHICS CARD VENDOR HIS announced its HIS 7850 Fan 2GB video card based on AMD's Radeon HD 7850 chip.

HIS touts the HIS 7850 Fan 2GB video card for its overclocking capabilities that AMD's Southern Islands chips have become known for. HIS' factory settings clock the GPU at 860MHz with the 2GB GDDR5 memory running at 4.8GHz, however the firm claims its Iturbo software utility can control the fan speed, power consumption and the GPU and memory clock at the same time.

HIS has gone for the standard configuration of two mini-Displayport, one dual-link DVI and one HDMI output for its HIS 7850 Fan 2GB, with the card's main distingishing feature over other AMD Radeon HD 7850 cards being the cooler and its shroud. Although HIS proclaims the overclocking capabilities of its Iturbo software, many reviewers and users have reported Radeon HD 7850 cards are exceptionally overclockable, hitting 1GHz core clock speeds.

The problem for AMD is that Nvidia launched its Geforce GTX 680 GPU two weeks ago and pretty much blew away AMD's Southern Islands GPU. However given that most AMD Radeon HD 7850 cards are half the price of Nvidia's Geforce GTX 680 cards and there will be a wait until the Green Goblin trickles its new architecture down, HIS' 7850 Fan 2GB is as good a choice as any other AMD Radeon HD 7850, if you can find it in stock. µ
