Angry Birds theme parks head for the UK

Pigs are thought to be worried

CASUAL GAMING MONSTER Rovio is planning to open up theme parks based on its smash hit Angry Birds game in the UK.

Reuters reports that the game, which is already a massive hit on the Android and Iphone mobile systems and available for the Blackberry Playbook and Windows Phone, is steadily establishing itself as a cash cow and that has lead to a tie up with a "major US retail chain" for merchandising, as well as playground plans.

"We want to make Angry Birds a permanent part of pop culture," said the firm's marketing chief Peter Vesterbacka during a chat with Reuters. "We're just getting started."

You will already have seen Angry Birds merchandise. You can find it on t-shirts and speaker systems and plush toys, but you should get ready to see a lot more of it soon.

Theme parks will feature swings and climbing towers, as well as slides and other outdoorsy things. We expect that catapults will not be featured, nor blocks of ice, boxes of fireworks, or pigs. The parks will be built in partnership with Finnish playground equipment maker Lappset. We have contacted Rovio for more details.

Rovio will launch Angry Birds in Space this month, the next major release in the series. It should be available tomorrow. µ
