CHIP DESIGNER AMD has launched its single processor Opteron 3200 series chips for low-end web servers.
AMD's Opteron got a major revamp last November with the Bulldozer architecture, however the firm sensibly chose to deploy the new architecture on its high-volume two, four and eight-processor capable models. Now AMD has released the Opteron 3200 series, codenamed Zurich, for single processor servers and workstations.
AMD's Opteron 3200 series chips feature four or eight cores with thermal design power ratings between 45W and 65W. AMD said the lowest frequency 3200 series Opteron will start off at 2.7GHz with Turbo Core bumping that up to 3.7GHz.
AMD was keen to stress its Opteron 3200 series processors, with prices starting at $99 in 1,000-unit quantities, are low cost chips aimed primarily at the web hosting market.
According to AMD the idea is to decrease the time taken by firms to recoup capital investment and to meet that goal AMD has aggressively cut features and requirements, such as sporting a dual-channel memory controller that does not require buffered DIMMs. However the biggest cost saver is the fact that Opteron 3200 series chips use Socket AM3+, the same socket used by the firm's consumer chips, resulting in a multitude of motherboards being available to server builders.
AMD's Opteron 3200 series chips will be fabbed using Globalfoundries' 32nm process node. If the Opteron 3200 series sounds a lot like the firm's FX-range that's because it is, however the firm claimed its Opteron chips went through different tests and had a different "rate of silicon" which is rated for "24/7 use with high utilisation".
AMD said its Opteron 3200 series chips have been in production since the tail end of 2011, which means system builders should have their hands on the chips very soon. µ
