SOFTWARE DEVELOPER Google has brought to the UK a campaign to help firms spiff up their mobile web presentations.
The internet services giant's Getmo web site offers tips and tools designed to help companies improve their mobile web presence. It allows firms to see just how good or bad their existing web sites look when rendered on a mobile device.
"Just because you can see your desktop site on a mobile phone doesn't mean it's mobile-friendly. Mobile sites are designed for the small screen, with the needs of mobile users in mind. A mobile-friendly site can help your business connect with customers and drive conversions," Google pointed out.
The Getmo web site quotes Gartner research predicting that by 2013 more people will be using mobile devices such as smartphones than PCs or tablets to access the internet.
According to Google, businesses should concentrate on the basics when it comes to mobile. "When thinking about mobilising content, keep in mind that the mobile screen is a lot smaller than that of a desktop computer. Present your content in the most optimal way for mobile users - avoid squeezing your desktop layout into your mobile site. When in doubt, use real data to guide how to mobilise your site content," said the company.
Getmo also stresses the importance of making sure that the pages load quickly and have big icons that are easy to navigate on a touchscreen device. Web sites should also cater for localisation and mobile redirects that can automatically tell if visitors are using a mobile device and send them to a mobile-friendly version.
Google launched the Getmo initiative in the US at the end of last year. µ
