Microsoft’s Xbox turns 10 years old

A decade of fun

SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE SHOP Microsoft is celebrating 10 years of Xbox console gaming.

It has launched a web site to celebrate the event and there Microsoft is proudly displaying the highlights of its 10 year, two consoles gaming history.

To be honest, there are not too many highlights, at least, not in the list that Microsoft has provided.

The history of the Xbox can be summarised with 13 "Key moments", three of which are about its Kinect system.

2001 is of course recognised for the Xbox itself, and 2002 for giving us Xbox Live. The year 2003 cannot have been all that dandy, though, as we skip to 2004 when the Xbox Arcade launched,

We pause briefly in 2005 when the Xbox 360 was released and original consoles started gathering dust, and then don't raise our heads again until 2007 and the launch of Halo 3.

2008 gave us avatars and Party Mode, and in 2009 we first heard about project Natal and TV and movies on demand.

In 2010 we learned that Natal would be called Kinect, and then waited until that was launched later that year. In 2011, Microsoft tells us, it "changed the face of TV" by adding things like Netflix and Lovefilm to its services.

There is more to the Xbox history of course, not least Halo CE, Halo 2, Halo Reach and Halo ODST, as well as hundreds of other titles and some millions of console sales. µ
