UK TELECOM BT has reported promising results with on-going trials of what it calls White Space technology, which makes use of gaps in the TV broadcast spectrum to deliver fast wireless broadband to remote rural areas.
Cornwall is the county that BT is teeing up for the trial, which centres on using the white space that traditionally has been left as unused buffers in the television spectrum to prevent overlapping.
The telco told The INQUIRER that the rollout in Cornwall is the next step after a successful smaller scale trial on the Isle of Bute.
"BT can confirm it is planning to extend its trial of TV White Space to Cornwall following a successful initial trial on the Isle of Bute. The Bute trial has generated some encouraging results and so it is time to extend it to a larger audience and to test the technology further," BT said.
The next trial will take place in the same area where BT has been testing LTE technology with the Orange and T-Mobile company Everything Everywhere.
BT added that on the back of the Bute trial the Cornish rollout will give it the chance to make a direct comparison between white space technology and LTE.
BT estimates that the number of broadband "slow spots" will comprise between two and three per cent of UK homes in the next five years and that alternative technologies such as White Space TV and LTE will be essential in delivering decent broadband speeds to these unlucky few subscribers. µ
