CHIP DESIGNER Nvidia's GPUs are available in Dell Poweredge rack and tower servers for the first time.
But gamers need not get too excited. Dell's GPU equipped Poweredge R720 and T620 servers are designed for compute intensive work, including Mathworks Matlab for computational research and Simulia Abaqus for computer aided engineering.
The Poweredge R720 servers ship with one or two 512-core Nvidia Tesla M2090 GPUs and Intel's new Sandy Bridge Xeon E5/R processors.
Moving up the scale, Dell's Poweredge T620 servers can pack in up to four Nvidia Tesla or Quadro graphics cards for computer aided design and structural analysis applications.
According to Dell it has designed the systems because "GPU computing is growing in demand".
In a parallel announcement Nvidia said its Tesla M2090 GPUs will be included in HP Proliant SL250 Generation 8 (Gen8) servers running Intel Sandy Bridge Xeon E5-2600 series chips.
Sumit Gupta, director of Tesla GPU computing at Nvidia said, "The higher-performance Sandy Bridge CPUs unleash the power of Nvidia GPUs to an even greater degree, enabling them to maximise acceleration for a range of commercial and scientific HPC applications."
These HPC applications include AMBER, GROMACS, LAMMPS, Simulia Abaqus, seismic processing, and others. µ
