CHIPMAKER Intel has expanded its Medfield range of Atom chips by introducing the Atom Z2580 and Z2000.
Intel showed off its first Medfield Atom Z2450 processor at CES and waited less than two months before tripling its smartphone chip range with the Atom Z2580 and Atom Z2000. According to Intel, the Z2450 will end up in the middle of its range with the Z2580 being its high-end offering clocked up to 2GHz.
While Intel was keen to point to the LTE capabilities of the Atom Z2580, the firm knows that it is the low-end smartphone market that will generate volume. According to Intel, the low-end smartphone market could be as large as 500 million units by 2015 and for that it has the 1GHz Atom Z2000 chip.
Intel's Atom Z2000 might not sport LTE connectivity but according to the firm there will be dual-sim 2G and 3G connectivity, which is extremely popular in emerging markets. Whether that will appear in Western markets remains to be seen.
Intel claims both Atom Z2580 and Atom Z2000 chips will sample in the second half of 2012 and end up in smartphones in the first half of 2013.
As Intel took the wraps off its latest Medfield Atom chips, the firm also warned its rivals that it is already working on building chips on a 14nm process node. It is expected that Intel's 'tri-gate' technology will be capable of shrinking down to 14nm, however beyond that is another matter entirely. µ
